THINGS THAT MATTER
I lot of things matter to me. A few things matter A LOT to me. Here are a few of the big deals.
good questions
I think there’s something spiritual about asking really good questions. I care about asking good questions at work, at home with my husband, in my relationships with friends, and of myself. Here are a few resources that continue to help me hone my skill:
Design Kit: The Human-Centered Design Toolkit (I’m currently working on my Design Thinking certification)
On Being with Krista Tippet + Better Conversations Guide
My small group of girlfriends (can’t link to this one, but trust me, they ask THE BEST questions)
Anything by Brene Brown and Elizabeth Gilbert
Another Name for Every Thing with Richard Rohr
travel
I’ll go anywhere as long as there’s good food.
music
In high school and college, I spent an obscene amount of time scouring LimeWire for the latest album you’d never heard of. Now I offer to bring the drinks and the playlist to a party.
Here’s one of my latest favorites.
reading
I grew up without the Internet, so I read a lot. I still read a lot, but a lot of it on the Internet. I have 2 tangible magazine subscriptions - Fast Company and The Atlantic.
Books that changed me:
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle (the first book I read more than once)
Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor (it changed how I looked at faith)
This Is Marketing by Seth Godin (it inspired me to think bigger in my work)
The Awakening by Kate Chopin (ask me about this one)
The Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt by Eleanor Roosevelt (because I realized powerful women can also be unsure and insecure sometimes)
entrepreneurship and brand management
Entrepreneurs must be the oracles of our day or something; I am completely in awe and inspired by them. It ties to my expertise in and love of marketing. If marketing is all touch points with all customers, entrepreneurs are the truest kinds of marketers. Until I launch the next Warby Parker, I’m an avid consumer.
A few of my favorite media to consume related to building businesses:
Business Model Generation by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur
The Other Side of Innovation by Chris Trimble and Vijay Govindarajan
